My recall is fine but 9700 application questions throw a context I have never seen and I blank. How do you train for the "apply it to something new" questions?

Drill past-paper application questions specifically — the skill is recognising which bit of biology the new context is testing.
On data: describe the trend with the actual figures FIRST, then explain. Most "blanks" are people skipping the describe step.
