Decoding the Audio: Mastering Paper 2 Listening
Paper 2 listening tests your ability to understand spoken Spanish in various contexts. Success isn't just about having a good vocabulary; it's about using smart strategies to actively process information under exam conditions.
Think of yourself as a detective at a crime scene. The audio is your witness testimony. During your first pass (the first listen), you get a general sense of what happened. During your second, more focused pass (the second listen), you're looking for specific clues (keywords, numbers, names) to solve the case (answer the questions). You must ignore misleading 'distractors' and focus only on the evidence presented.
- 1
Analyse the questions first: Use the reading time to underline keywords in the questions and options. Predict the topic and the type of information you'll need to find.
- 2
First listen for the gist: Relax and listen for the overall theme, the speakers' relationship, and the main purpose of the conversation. Don't try to answer everything yet.
- 3
Second listen for detail: With the context established, listen again with the specific questions in mind. Pinpoint the exact information needed to answer or justify your choices.
- 4
Review and refine: Use the final minutes to check your answers. Ensure they are logical, grammatically correct (for fill-in-the-blanks), and directly supported by the audio.

Understanding the Paper 2 Listening Assessment
The listening paper lasts 45 minutes and is worth 25 marks. You will hear three audio passages, each linked to one of the five prescribed themes (Identities, Experiences, Human Ingenuity, Social Organisation, Sharing the Planet). The texts can be dialogues, interviews, news reports, announcements, or instructions. You will have 5 minutes of reading time before the audio begins, and you will hear each passage twice. The questions are printed in a separate booklet.
Duration: 45 minutes
Marks: 25
Texts: 3 audio passages
Themes: All 5 themes are potential sources
Procedure: 5 mins reading time, each passage played twice
Strategy 1: Active Pre-Listening (The 5-Minute Reading Time)
The 5 minutes before the audio starts are critical. Do not sit passively. Use this time to become an active and prepared listener. Read every question for all three texts. As you read, underline the keywords (e.g., the 'wh-' words: quién, qué, dónde, cuándo, por qué, cómo). For multiple-choice questions, quickly read the options. This process helps you to build a mental framework of the topics and predict the kind of information you are listening for. You might be listening for a number, a name, a reason, or an opinion. Knowing this in advance transforms you from a passive receiver into an active hunter of information.
When you underline a keyword in a question, also think of possible synonyms or related phrases the speaker might use. For example, if the question asks about 'el coste' (the cost), listen for words like 'precio', 'vale', 'cuesta', or a specific amount of money.
Strategy 2: The Two-Listen Approach: Gist then Detail
You will hear each audio passage twice. It is vital to use these two opportunities for different purposes. Trying to answer all the detailed questions on the first listen is a common cause of panic and missed information.
First Listening: Focus on the 'big picture'. What is the text about? Who is speaking? What is their relationship? What is the overall tone or mood? Try to answer any main idea questions and get a general sense of the structure. Don't worry about writing full answers.
Second Listening: Now, home in on the details. You already have the context. Use this listen to confirm your initial ideas and to pinpoint the specific information required to answer the remaining questions. Listen for the keywords you underlined. This is when you should finalise your answers.
Strategy 3: Tackling Different Question Types
The exam uses a variety of question formats to test different aspects of your comprehension. You need a specific strategy for each.
Multiple Choice: Read the stem of the question and all options before the audio. Be wary of distractors—options that use words from the audio but in the wrong context. Eliminate obviously wrong answers first.
True/False/Not Mentioned (V/F/NM): This is a test of precision. 'False' means the audio explicitly contradicts the statement. 'Not Mentioned' means the audio gives no information either way. If you are asked to justify, you must refer to the specific part of the text that proves your choice.
Fill-in-the-Blanks: Read the sentence and predict the type of word needed (e.g., a noun, a verb, a number). The answer will usually be taken directly from the text, so listen for the exact wording. Pay attention to grammar, such as noun-adjective agreement.
Worked examples
See the formulas applied — reveal one step at a time, like the exam.
Audio Snippet (Hypothetical): A radio host says, 'Bienvenidos a 'Planeta Verde'. Hoy hablamos del nuevo programa de reciclaje en nuestra ciudad. Aunque algunos critican la logística, el objetivo principal es reducir la basura en un 50% antes de 2025. Escuchemos a la alcaldesa...'
Question: ¿Cuál es el propósito principal del programa de radio? (A) Criticar a la alcaldesa. (B) Informar sobre una iniciativa medioambiental. (C) Anunciar la fecha de 2025.
- 1
Model Analysis: The question asks for the 'propósito principal' (main purpose). During the first listen, you should identify the topic as an environmental initiative ('Planeta Verde', 'programa de reciclaje').
Audio Snippet (Hypothetical): An interviewee says, 'El festival de cine se celebrará exclusivamente en la capital este año, a diferencia de años anteriores cuando se repartía por varias ciudades.'
Question: The film festival will take place in several cities this year. (Verdadero / Falso). Justifique su respuesta.
- 1
Model Analysis: The correct answer is 'Falso'.
