Quick answer
MarkScheme ([markscheme.app](https://markscheme.app)) marks handwritten IB Diploma answers with markband-style criterion feedback — not a single vague grade. Self-assess against the official markband column first, then upload photos at [Mark a paper](/mark) as a second pass. Deep guide: [AI marking IB past papers](/blog/ai-marking-ib-past-papers-guide).
What this demo shows
For Cambridge Cambridge past paper revision, iB marking is not a checklist of content points — examiners place your answer in a band using descriptor language (e.g. "clear analysis" vs "perceptive analysis"). This demo shows photographing one IB response and getting feedback anchored to those criteria, across HL, SL, and Core subjects where marking is enabled.

Step-by-step (from the video)
This section covers Step-by-step (from the video) — ranked by what Cambridge examiners return to most often in past papers.
- Attempt under timed conditions — treat it like the real paper (command term, word limit, structure).
- Self-place into a markband — read the official column and highlight which descriptor phrases your answer actually meets.
- Photograph your script — one clear image per question or page.
- Open markscheme.app/mark — choose IB Diploma and your subject.
- Upload and wait — criterion-style comments in ~30 seconds per question.
- Compare — did you award yourself a band you did not earn? Redo one skill (application, synthesis, evaluation).
Transcript
> IB students always ask: can an app actually mark my essay against markbands, or is it just ChatGPT saying "good analysis"? > > Here is the honest answer. Generic AI is not tied to your subject's markband column. It will sound confident and still miss whether your answer fits band 4 or band 5. > > What I do: I write the response properly, then I read the markband descriptors myself and I am strict — if I did not evaluate both sides, I do not pretend I did. > > Then I upload a photo of the same answer to markscheme.app/mark. MarkScheme is built for criterion-style feedback on handwriting — it comments against IB-style descriptors, not a random percentage. > > It is a second pass. You still need to read the markband column yourself first. Use it when you are unsure if your "analysis" is actually analysis, or if your case study application is too descriptive. > > Pair it with free IB courses at markscheme.app/ib/courses if you are weak on the content before you mark. Link in bio — try one question tonight.
Honest limits
MarkScheme is not endorsed by the IBO. Markbands are holistic; no tool replaces an experienced teacher on borderline scripts. Very illegible handwriting may not be readable. Subject-specific papers differ — a Psychology ERQ is not an Economics Paper 1 case response. Use [IB markbands explained](/blog/ib-markbands-explained) and your subject paper guide before you trust any second opinion.
