Overview
International schools often choose between Cambridge International A-Level and Pearson Edexcel International A Level (IAL). Both are serious university-entry routes. The useful question is not which logo is “better,” but whether you want linear end-of-course papers (Cambridge) or modular units cashed in with UMS (Edexcel IAL) — and whether your revision matches that exam game.
Quick comparison
Neither is a shortcut. Universities treat both as A-Level-standard international qualifications when grades match the offer.
| Cambridge International A-Level | Edexcel International A Level | |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Mostly linear (papers at the end of the course) | Modular units; overall grade via UMS |
| Maths shape | Syllabus codes (e.g. 9709) with paper components | Units such as Pure 1–4, Mechanics, Statistics (WMA/WME/WST) |
| Marking flavour | Method / accuracy / independent marks (B/M/A style) | Method and accuracy marks with follow-through |
| Footprint | Very wide in international schools | Growing; common where Pearson is already used |
| MarkScheme today | Full courses + past-paper marking | IAL Maths practice marking live; shell for Physics/Chem/Bio |
Modular vs linear — why it changes how you study
For Cambridge which Cambridge A-Level subjects, on Edexcel IAL, you can sit units across sessions and build an overall UMS total. That rewards consistent unit performance and clear “cash-in” planning. On Cambridge, more of the risk sits in the final paper set for that series — so past-paper timing and full-paper stamina matter more.
If you switch boards mid-course, map topics carefully: Pure content overlaps heavily, but paper style and mark wording do not. Practising the wrong board’s papers trains the wrong reflexes.
How marking differs in practice
For Cambridge which Cambridge A-Level subjects, both boards award credit for valid method and correct answers, but the published schemes use different conventions and phrasing. That is why board-specific marking beats generic AI grades.

Where OxfordAQA fits
[OxfordAQA International](/oxfordaqa) is a third international option — linear A-levels with a growing footprint and thinner free tooling online. MarkScheme has subject shells for Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology; marking for OxfordAQA waits until Edexcel IAL Maths conversion proves the multi-board funnel.
Practical pick
This section covers Practical pick — ranked by what Cambridge examiners return to most often in past papers.
- Take the board your school teaches well.
- Confirm university recognition for your target country/course.
- Revise that board’s papers and mark schemes — not a mix.
- Use marking that speaks the board’s dialect: Cambridge schemes or Edexcel IAL method/accuracy for Maths.
