Water — common mistakes

When asked to explain the importance of a water property, don't just define the property! Always link it directly to its biological significance and provide a clear example of how it benefits living organisms or ecological systems. Think: 'Property X allows/prevents Y, which is important because Z.'

Water is highly polar, meaning it has slightly positive and negative ends. This allows it to effectively surround and dissolve many other polar and ionic substances, making it an excellent medium for metabolic reactions and transport of nutrients, gases, and waste products within organisms. Cohesion, the attraction between water molecules due to hydrogen bonds, and adhesion, the attraction of water to other polar surfaces, are essential for the transpiration stream. They enable a continuous column of water to move up the xylem vessels from roots to leaves, resisting gravity and ensuring water supply for photosynthesis and structural support.

Water acts as a metabolite, meaning it is directly involved in chemical reactions. In hydrolysis reactions, water is added to break down large molecules (e.g., digestion of polymers). In condensation reactions, water is removed to build up large molecules (e.g., synthesis of proteins, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids from their monomers).
