The prolonged exposure without the feared negative consequence teaches the brain that the phobic stimulus is not dangerous. The anxiety response is physiologically time-limited and eventually subsides, breaking the conditioned link between the stimulus and fear.

No, this oversimplifies the process. CBT is not about replacing negative thoughts with unrealistic positive ones. It's about helping individuals to identify their specific irrational or unhelpful thought patterns and replace them with more realistic and balanced alternatives.
